Chiropractic care

Chiropractic includes diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of disorders of the nervous-musculoskeletal system - the entire musculoskeletal system, not just the lower back.

The main aim of chiropractic as a treatment method is to restore normal function in the musculoskeletal system and nervous system when malfunction has occurred.

As a specialist in the body's musculoskeletal system, the chiropractor is an expert in getting the joints, muscles and skeletal system to function optimally. Whether you already have problems with your musculoskeletal system and need treatment, or if you need advice and guidance about your body and health, you're in the best hands with a chiropractor. The brain is the overall center that controls all the body's functions. It does this by sending its signals through an intricate network of nerve fibers between the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) and the rest of the body. This network branches out from the spinal column. A malfunction in a joint in the spine that causes nerve irritation and changes in the associated soft tissue is called a subluxation. A subluxation will result in impaired health. Chiropractic treatment restores normal function in the musculoskeletal system and nervous system when a subluxation has occurred. This is most often done by means of specific joint correction.

Chiropractors undergo extensive training and gain the knowledge and skills to evaluate, diagnose and treat various problems in the nervous, musculoskeletal and skeletal systems. Chiropractors are authorized healthcare professionals and have the right to refer and take sick leave.

What can a chiropractor treat?

Chiropractors can treat a range of acute and chronic conditions, including

  • Back pain
  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headache/migraine
  • Knee and ankle problems
  • Stretch marks
  • Sprains and strains
  • Pain associated with arthritis
  • Work-related injuries
  • Sports injuries

A common treatment method used by a chiropractor is manual manipulation of the vertebrae in the spine or other joints, usually called an "adjustment" or "correction". This helps to restore the natural movement of the joint and improve function.

What happens during a chiropractic treatment?

Manipulating or adjusting a joint activates receptors in the joint capsule and other soft tissue structures around the joint. This gives the brain a better picture of the joint, which in turn makes it easier and more efficient to move. In other words, it improves communication between the brain and the body.

The "popping" sound you may hear during treatment comes from the formation of gas inside a joint, a process called tribonucleation. This is not dangerous and not necessary to improve movement in the joint.

The formation of gas bubbles can occur when two wet surfaces are separated. In joints found in the fingers and back, there are two wet surfaces of smooth cartilage that are lubricated with synovial fluid (synovial fluid). If these surfaces are quickly separated from each other, gas bubbles can form. This can be illustrated by thinking of a glass plate lying on top of a glass table with water in between. When you try to lift the glass plate, you will feel it being sucked onto the table.

Are there any side effects?

Most people experience minimal or no side effects after undergoing chiropractic treatment. However, a few people may experience soreness in the area that was treated, as this is the body's natural reaction to the change that has been made. This is usually completely harmless and will disappear within 12-24 hours.

In rare cases, side effects such as pain, headache, dizziness and nausea may occur, but these are also normally harmless and will subside quickly. Chiropractic adjustment is considered a safe form of treatment for musculoskeletal problems.
